Stepped-Up Basis
An adjustment of inherited property's tax basis, often linked to value at death. Treatment depends on the property and applicable tax rules.
The book uses this shorthand in inherited-property decisions. It is not a determination of your property's basis, valuation date, or tax liability. Ask your tax adviser to establish the applicable basis before estimating a sale's tax consequences.
